Helpful Hints

  • Reminder: Only FSU entities may pass out flyers or advertising materials on campus.
  • The active distribution of passing/handing out of materials by FSU entities may occur on paved sidewalks on campus as long as it does not unreasonably interfere with the movement of traffic, classes, or other university activities.
  • Active distribution shall not occur within 30 feet of any entrance or exit way of any campus facility.
  • Do not force materials on anyone who passes-by.
  • If the items you are distributing are littering the campus, please clean them up!
  • Any item distributed must contain the name and contact information of the FSU sponsoring organization, department or entity.
  • Businesses and/or for-profit entities much obtain a solicitor's permit from Business Services in advance of active distribution.
  • Reminder: Only FSU entities may chalk messages on FSU's campus.
  • Use powder-based chalk sticks. Do not use liquid or spray chalk or any other material.
  • Chalking is to be done on concrete surfaces (no brick or cobblestone areas) that are parallel to the sky in which chalk substances can be washed away completely by rain.
  • Do not chalk on the vertical sections of stairs/steps or on any facility.
  • Chalking is to be done in open areas that can be directly cleaned by rain. Do not chalk under awnings, bridges, tents or structures that have roofs/covers.
  • A chalked message is to promote an event/activity and shall represent dates/times/locations for that activity including the name of the sponsoring FSU entity.
  • Your organization / department may be contacted to wash-down your chalked message if it is done in an improper area or if it lasts for more than 2 weeks.
  • If chalk substances or markings cannot be removed, organizations may be charged for cleaning and/or damages.
  • Reminder: Only FSU entities may post flyers or materials on the outdoor boards.
  • All materials advertising events, or which invite any transaction involving a fee or other monetary charge, must be clear and legible, bear the name of the sponsoring FSU entity and provide event and current contact information.
  • FSU students posting an item for sale or to advertise a service must use their FSU email address on the flyer to confirm FSU identity/affiliation.
  • Materials placed on the outdoor posting boards may not exceed 8.5x11 in size.
  • Only one flyer per board of the same kind or for the same event may be posted at any time.
  • Do not place flyers on top of others, thus covering their message or material.
  • The SGA logo must appear on your flyer if A&S funds are used for the event/activity.
  • Reminder: Only FSU entities may place free-standing signs on campus.
  • Free-standing signs must promote an event or activity. They are not to be used for "general advertising" of an organization or department, but to promote a specific event or occurrence.
  • Signs may be placed on campus in designated locations for up to 7 days prior to the event/ occurrence and must be removed within 24-hours (by members of sponsoring FSU entity) upon completion of the event/activity.
  • Up to Five (5) A-Frames/Sandwich Boards/Tee Pees, (no larger than 4'X3') may be placed on campus at one time for one event/occurrence.
  • Up to Ten (10) Stake Signs (no larger than 24"X18") may be placed on campus at one time for a single event/occurrence.
  • The placement of free-standing signs must be in accordance with terms in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and are not to block sidewalks or walkways. For more information about ADA compliance, please contact the FSU Student Disability Resource Center .
  • Free-Standing signs must contain the name and contact information of the FSU sponsoring organization, department or entity.
  • Remember: your signs may be removed/re-located due to placement in improper location, damage due to weather, or other circumstances deemed necessary by the university.

To hang a banner in the Oglesby Union, please visit the Guest Services Desk in the Student Services Building (SSB — 2nd floor) or call 644-6083. To hang a banner in a residence hall, please contact the Department of Residence Life at 644-2863, or visit them on the ground floor of the Askew Student Life Center. Any banner that is to be hung on campus or affixed to the outside of any building in a location other than a residence hall or the Oglesby Union must be approved by Dennis Bailey, Associate Vice President for Facilities. To facilitate approval, please send an email to Dennis Bailey (dbailey2@admin.fsu.edu) and outline the following:

  • Description of the Banner, including size, material, and message and affiliation with a university-wide or departmental/student organization activity.
  • Location you want your Banner displayed.
  • Dates you would like your Banner to be displayed.
  • Relevance to your organization and/or the university community.
  • Special Events.
  • Name, role/position, telephone number and email address of person making request.

Additional privileges are afforded to university-wide events as endorsed by the President or designee. These would include events such as Student Government Association Fall and Spring elections; Homecoming; Parents' Weekend; university commencement and/or anniversary activities.

These additional privileges include:
  • Materials for posting on outdoor kiosks may be up to 16"X20" in size.
  • Up to Ten (10) A-Frames/Sandwich Boards/Tee Pees, (no larger than 4'X3') may be placed on campus at designated locations.
  • Up to Twenty (20) Stake Signs (no larger than 24"X18" ) may be placed on campus at designated locations.

The placement of balloons or other material on any object or the distribution/placement of materials outside of the provisions in this regulation for designated special events only is subject to the approval of the Director of the Oglesby Union or designee at least 7 days prior to desired occurrence. Send an email request to Robyn Brock, Associate Director, Oglesby Union (rbrock@admin.fsu.edu) outlining the following:

  • Description of the special request including affiliation with a university-wide or departmental/student organization activity.
  • Dates you would like for your special request to be considered. Please also include who will remove the items and the proposed dates for removal.
  • Relevance to your organization and/or the university community.
  • Name, role/position, telephone number and email address of person making request.
  • The active distribution of materials, posting of materials on the outdoor posting boards, and placement of free-standing signs is afforded to candidates running for office and their representatives.
  • These signs, flyers or materials must promote a specific candidate running for office. General Advertising for an election or ideology is not applicable to the terms of this regulation.
  • All provisions (size, location, duration, etc.) are to be complied with and can be found by reviewing the policies related to active distribution, posting boards, and free-standing signs.
